“Tomorrow’s successful organisations will be those that harness the collective and synergistic brilliance of all their people and not just an elite few.”
Ese is a passionate social scientist and a diversity & inclusion conversation starter. Her research endeavors touch on the sensitive topics of fostering diversity and optimal refugee settlement. She has worked in the corporate, academic and non-for-profit sectors in Europe, Africa and North America. Helping people feel wanted and heard is one of her strong professional passions. With academic and professional qualifications from 4 different countries, she has been exposed to the intrinsic challenges of racialized and minority groups. Findings from her doctoral research indicate that the decisive initiative from organisations has a good potential for fostering diversity; however, fostering diversity requires an organisation to have a culture which embraces diversity as well as an adequate level of psychological empowerment. Without both, she’s found that there will always be the disconnect between an organisation’s diversity initiative, and the internalization of employees’ multiculturalism experience.
Her other studies have shown the dynamic relationships between organizational culture, social perception of diversity and psychological empowerment within top-rated BEE companies.Working with marginalized individuals, human resource managers, engaging in projects focused on fostering diversity, employee empowerment, and broad-based work force depolarization are among her other professional interests. Ese holds a master’s degree in management from the University of Salford, UK as well as a PhD in Diversity Management and Organizational Behaviour from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.
Having worked in highly volatile and emotionally charged settings such as that of many South African companies, Ese thrives in engaging inspiring conversations and discourses that test preconceptions and lead to a greater understanding of power, privilege, and the ability to see things from several perspectives. Innovative solutions for diversity, inclusion, and a common feeling of belonging are produced because of this meaningful interaction. In her role as the fundraising coordinator for a non for profit, she is aware of the inherent and contextual nature of the problem of social exclusion and mono-culturalism.
